Common Domain Registration Pitfalls!

Dealing with Internic/Network Solutions can be a real pain. We feel for you, honestly. Here are some things which might shed some light on this frustrating process of domain registration.

New customers, if you're registering a new domain, let us do it for you - no extra charge. We can save you weeks of frustration, and you'll pay only $49 instead of the $70-$119 Network Solutions price.

Or, if you're moving your domain, we are experts and we'll do everything in our power to help facilitate your move and make sure that you have no downtime.

If you are a NewCreations reseller or customer, use this shortened form to register your domains and we will handle the rest.

Here are some common pitfalls to avoid when relocating your domain:

- Did you remember to email the template back to Internic? :)

- For relocations, are you forgetting to enter Y or YES (to the right of ".........:" ) in item 0a?

- Are you responding with html email turned on? The Internic can't process html email, only plain ascii text. If you are using an email client other than Netscape or Pegasus, it might be adding extra formatting characters to your messages. You might want to try switching to a plain ascii text email client.

- Are you accidentally removing the version number?

- Again, for relocations, are you the Admin or Tech contact? If not, you'll have to pester whoever is - they are the only ones who have authority to change your domain. :(

- (Always Always Always get registered as either your domain's tech or Admin contact! NewCreations will always register you as at least Admin contact. There are lots of shady "free domain registration" services out there who will tie up your domain for months, just hoping that you'll get frustrated and pay them to activate the domain on their servers rather than have it just sit offline!! Don't do it! Have us register for you.)

- Are you replying from a different email address than the one you listed on your domain? This is a very common problem - you change ISPs, forget to change the record on their domain before closing that email account, and Internic demands verification from the now closed email account in order to make changes to the domain. (And you may as well just delete your domain and start over at that point!!)

If you respond from another email address, the Internic will not process your update. This is how they authenticate that you actually are the authorized person to make changes to the domain, and not just someone trying to cause mischief.

- Internic won't change the name of "Organization Using Domain Name" - if you want that item changed, you must delete and re-register the domain and pay another $75. (Or have us do it for $49)

So, if you're a reseller, don't register your customer's domains in YOUR company's name. In other words, the "Organization Using Domain Name" should not be you, it should be your customer.

When Internic first started charging for domain registrations, lots of web designers weren't aware of this (Internic doesn't make this policy known anywhere on their site), and registered hundreds of domains using their co name as Organization Using Domain Name. Then, as their customers tried to move the domain, the designers had to pay for lots of re-registrations (and that was when it was $100 a pop! OUCH!)
